Created in the 1920s by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates method is a gentle but profoundly structured physical exercise. It is based on a holistic approach to the body, with the emphasis on strengthening postural muscles, controlling movement and controlled breathing. A cross between gymnastics, yoga and functional rehabilitation, it is now widely recognised and used in the world of well-being as well as in the medical and sporting fields.
Pilates is based on six fundamental principles: centring, breathing, control, precision, fluidity and awareness of movement. These principles enable the body to work deeply and with respect for the joints. The aim is to strengthen the core of the body, which includes the abdominals, pelvic floor, lumbar muscles and buttocks. A strong core improves postural alignment, prevents muscular imbalances and relieves areas of tension, particularly in the back.
Several studies show that Pilates can reduce chronic back pain, improve balance, flexibility and even breathing capacity in older people (Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2014; Physical Therapy Science, 2018). In rehabilitation, it is used to support patients with musculoskeletal disorders, in the post-partum phase, or as part of functional rehabilitation.
Pilates is also an excellent preventive method. It teaches you to make better use of your body in everyday life: to sit correctly, to lift a load without injuring yourself, or to breathe more efficiently. This heightened body awareness enables you to develop more fluid, balanced movements in all the activities of daily life.
One of Pilates' greatest assets is its modularity: whether on the floor (mat), with small equipment (balls, rings, elastics, etc.) or on machines (reformer, cadillac, etc.), Pilates can be adapted to all ages and all physical conditions, from experienced athletes to people undergoing rehabilitation. Supervised by a trained professional, in particular a physiotherapist, it becomes a genuine therapeutic tool, safe and customisable.
As well as the physical benefits, many people report a mental calm. The concentration required during the sessions helps them to disconnect from everyday stress, making it a complete method that benefits both body and mind.
